Talmudic Lattice Path Counting

Consider all planar walks, with positive unit steps (1, 0) and (0, 1), from the origin (0, 0) to a given point (a, b). Let L be the line joining the beginning to the end, i.e., the line b x a y = 0. Call the region below L "downtown," and the region above L "uptown," the line L being the border-line between downtown and uptown. Each such walk has a + b 1 points, not counting the endpoints. For ...

Fibonacci Identities Derived from Path Counting in Automata

Combinatorial proofs are appealing since they lead to intuitive understanding. Proofs based on other mathematical techniques may be convincing, but still leave the reader wondering why the result holds. A large collection of combinatorial proofs is presented in [1], including many proofs of Fibonacci identities based on counting tilings of a one-dimensional board with squares and dominoes. An a...

A lattice path approach to counting

In this paper we give a combinatorial proof via lattice paths of the following result due to Andrews and Bressoud: for t 1, the number of partitions of n with all successive ranks at least t is equal to the number of partitions of n with no part of size 2 ? t. The identity is a special case of a more general theorem proved by Andrews and Bressoud using a sieve.

Identities from Weighted Motzkin Paths

Based on a weighted version of the bijection between Dyck paths and 2-Motzkin paths, we find combinatorial interpretations of two identities related to the Narayana polynomials and the Catalan numbers. These interpretations answer two problems posed recently by Coker. AMS Classification: 05A15, 05A19

Spin glass polynomial identities from entropic constraints

The core idea of stochastic stability is that thermodynamic observables must be robust under small (random) perturbations of the quenched Gibbs measure. Combining this idea with the cavity field technique, which aims to measure the free energy increment under addition of a spin to the system, we sketch how to write a stochastic stability approach to diluted mean field spin glasses which explici...
